The Geek pointed out this Ars Technica article. I must admit I had never thought about the hideous power demands of data centres, and it's great to see such intelligent responses to the problem, using passive methods. The permies strike again!
Since i know the geek isn't a member, Dean Kamen's island http://spectrum.ieee.org/energy/renewables/empire-off-the-grid and more particularly, some engineered solutions to very large data centres http://spectrum.ieee.org/green-tech/buildings/tech-titans-building-boom note on the first page. microsoft's new data centre uses 48 megawatts, enough power for 40000 homes - a reasonably sized small city, maybe a little smaller than Wollongong. Reducing power consumption by managing the centre's cooling needs becomes a real design issue
